Prepper vs. Hoarder

There is a very clear difference between prepping and hoarding.

Prepping occurs BEFORE a disaster when people buy items in order to have them available for individual / family use should a disaster occur at some future time. Prepping actually takes some of the pressure off of the supply chain after a disaster as those who have stockpiled items before the disaster are not competing with others in the community to find limited essential items in the aftermath of the disaster.

Hoarding occurs AFTER a disaster (or after a warning of an imminent disaster) when people rush to the stores and buy large quantities of essential items. An individual may buy all of some item that a merchant has in stock, leaving nothing available for others in the community who also need that item. In some cases, hoarding is done with the intent of re-selling these items at a price much higher than their initial cost or value.
