Surveillance

Image
All training programs designed to protect individuals from becoming victims of terrorism recommend that people be alert to surveillance. This is excellent advice, but, unfortunately, in most instances it is insufficient, because people have had no training in detecting surveillance, and terrorist organizations are often relatively sophisticated in their surveillance methods. Detecting surveillance conducted by trained experts is not as easy as most Hollywood films would lead us to believe. Fortunately, however, the type of surveillance conducted by terrorist organizations is not normally as elaborate as that done by intelligence organizations nor does it involve as many people or as much equipment. Nevertheless, for people to have a reasonable chance at detecting most forms of surveillance they would have to be somewhat familiar with the techniques used. The book Surveillance: Techniques & Countermeasures is an excellent reference for learning about physical surveillance and metho

Prepper vs. Hoarder

Image
There is a very clear difference between prepping and hoarding. Prepping occurs BEFORE a disaster when people buy items in order to have them available for individual / family use should a disaster occur at some future time. Prepping actually takes some of the pressure off of the supply chain after a disaster as those who have stockpiled items before the disaster are not competing with others in the community to find limited essential items in the aftermath of the disaster.    Hoarding occurs AFTER a disaster (or after a warning of an imminent disaster) when people rush to the stores and buy large quantities of essential items. An individual may buy all of some item that a merchant has in stock, leaving nothing available for others in the community who also need that item. In some cases, hoarding is done with the intent of re-selling these items at a price much higher than their initial cost or value.

The Fireless Cook Book

Image
The Fireless Cook Book : A Manual of the Construction and use of Appliances for Cooking by Retained Heat, with 250 recipes   by Mitchell, Margaret Johnes, b. 1869 https://archive.org/details/firelesscookbook00mitcrich Published in 1913 - The aim of this book is to present in a convenient form such directions for making and using fireless cookers and similar insulating boxes, that those who are not experienced, even in the ordinary methods of cookery, may be able to follow them easily and with success. The fact that their management has been so little understood has been the cause of failures among the adventurous women who, attracted by their novelty, have tried to experiment with them and have come to the mistaken conclusion that they are not practical, have limited scope, and are altogether a good deal of a disappointment. Such women have made the statement that they are not adapted to cooking starchy foods; that they will not do for most vegetables; that raised breads and puddings

One-Time Pad Encryption

Image
The S2 Underground has a YouTube video (50 min) that teaches how to use one-time pad encryption. Tradecraft: One-Time Pads (S2 Underground) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzwpmbIWUNc The Complete Guide to Secure Communications with the One-Time Pad Cipher - by: Dirk Rijmenants   https://ciphermachinesandcryptology.com/papers/one_time_pad.pdf is an excellent guide to understanding and using one-time pad encryption.   When used properly, one-time pad encryption is mathematically unbreakable. But, the one-time pad also has some disadvantages that can result in it being a poor choice for communication. The above video and guide book will help with understanding the one-time pad system and in deciding when and if you should use it to secure your own communications.

Communicating During an Internet Shutdown

Image
Do you have a plan to communicate, to share information, and receive uncensored news if the government shuts down your access to the Internet and cellular networks? Internet shutdowns are designed to block people from sharing information and communicating (and also push people into less secure forms of communication such as mobile phone and SMS, which are easier for authorities to intercept and monitor). There are not always good workarounds during complete shutdowns. During the strictest periods of the shutdown people resorted to using handwritten notes and couriers to get messages to their loved ones. We don’t have sure-fire ways to circumvent all blockages, but through conversations with activists and peers, we have learned some methods and approaches for offline sharing and communication that may work for you, depending on the circumstances. Note that some of these options require internet to initially set up (e.g. to download apps, etc). Some options... File Sharing and Communicat

Hunted - If You Had To Go On The Run, What Would You Do?

Image
The idea for this book originated with the British television reality series "Hunted" that began airing on Channel 4 (a British free-to-air public service television network) in September 2015. The series features contestants who are instructed to go on the run for a period of 25 to 28 days in Great Britain, while avoiding a team of Hunters composed of former and serving police officers, intelligence personnel, and on-the-ground pursuit teams (equipped with dogs and drones). If you had to go on the run, could you evade the powers of the state, could you escape from the police and intelligence services? What tactics and techniques would give you the best chance of escape? Could you hide from a process server or the repo man? Could you evade a nationwide manhunt? Could you evade a corrupt police officer or rouge government agency that was misusing confidential databases to stalk you?   If you had to go on the run (in the real world), what would you do? This book attempts to ans

Tsunami Waves as High as 42 Feet Could Hit Seattle in Minutes

Image
A simulation released by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) shows the impact of a 7.5-magnitude earthquake on the Seattle Fault. “Tsunami waves could be as high as 42 feet at the Seattle Great Wheel and will reach inland as far as Lumen Field and T-Mobile Park,” Washington State DNR said in a tweet Thursday. The study was prepared by geologists within the Washington Geological Survey division of DNR, according to a news release. ( https://www.dnr.wa.gov/news/new-study-details-impacts-tsunami-fault-running-through-seattle ) Scientists found that if a magnitude 7.5 earthquake were to occur on the Seattle Fault, tsunami waves over 40 feet tall could reach the Seattle area in fewer than 3 minutes. “Tsunami inundation and strong currents may continue for more than 3 hours from the start of the earthquake,” according to the news release. The study shows shoreline flooding and changes to shorelines would occur throughout the Seattle area following such a powerful earth

Govt. Calls Survivalists and Preppers "Homegrown Violent Extremists"

Image
We previously mentioned the book: Security Culture: A Guide to Staying Safe for Survivalists, Preppers, and Patriots by: Winston Smith    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B3GGLQ4W Smith's book pointed out that "The Department of Justice guide Investigating Terrorism and Criminal Extremism – Terms and Concepts lists “survivalists” alongside organizations like Al-Qaeda. Jemaah Islamiya, and the Aryan Brotherhood, warning that: The survivalist movement fears a coming collapse of civilization, generally as the result of nuclear war, and tries to prepare themselves to survive it. Survivalists typically stockpile food, water, and weapons, especially the latter, and instruct themselves on topics ranging from first aid to childbirth to edible plants." and that "government anti-terrorism officers are asking the public to report “questionable postings on Twitter or Facebook” to them. What you say on-line may get you listed in some government database as a domestic terrorist or home
