Top 10 Doomsday Theories

In 2013, SimplyHike conducted a poll to determine the most popular doomsday prepping theories among their readers at that time. The majority (53%) thought that financial collapse was the most likely doomsday scenario. The next most likely theory was an EMP, with only 8% of the votes.

Being a survivalist is, at its core, about being prepared for disaster.

There is a tendency among hardcore preppers and survivalists to prepare for only one or two extreme scenarios. Often, they are not very realistic SHTF scenarios. They tend to be focused on TEOTWAWKI, or ‘the end of the world as we know it’. Some are preparing for an EMP that might wipe out all electronics. Others are prepping for total societal collapse, or a superbug, or a nuclear strike. I’m not saying those disaster scenarios are impossible, but they are highly unlikely and they are very specific.

Readymade Resources published Top 10 Threats to Preppers in 2017, saying: "If you’re spending thousands of dollars on gear, food stores, firearms, ammunition and etc. preparing for an alien invasion of reptilian lizard men from Gliese 667Cc, you’re likely to be thoroughly disappointed with an actual doomsday event.  But hey, at least you got thirty MREs you can woof down. That’s the problem, when you have people calling themselves ‘preppers’ espousing these bombastic theories it turns everyone else away from very real threats that every man, woman, and child in this country could face."

Survival planning should focus on things that might actually happen (like financial collapse, and natural disasters) and leave the SHTF fantasies to the apocalypse fiction writers.
